Some context from page 17 is:

Darwin asserted [that] each of us harbors an ancient inner beast that we tame through rational thought.

Darwin's assertion in The Descent of Man was that we tame our inner beast through "intellect."

"...man [...] with his god-like intellect which has penetrated into the movements and constitution of the solar system — with all these exalted powers — Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin."[1]
